Maybe some day we’ll make to D23! While I’m not one for crowds, I frequently go to NYCC and that’s manageable. The photos and videos from this year’s convention looked absolutely bonkers though! The dust has settled now though, and our hearts are still racing! Disney pulled out all the stops this year, delivering a showcase packed with jaw-dropping surprises, nostalgic returns, and thrilling new adventures. Here is our breakdown of the top 10 announcements we absolutely cannot wait for!
Part 1: Movies
The Bluey Movie
For real life?! The beloved Heeler family is finally making their big-screen debut. Before Skippy came into our lives, we joked that we would become a Bluey family. Joke’s on us because shortly after we started introducing screen time, Bluey became one of Skippy’s all time favorites. They really WATCH when Bluey is on, which is something they don’t really do with Sesame Street or other pieces of media. We’re extra excited about this one. With an August 2027 release date, the timing would be perfect for Skippy’s very first big screen experience!
Coco 2
We’re heading back to the Land of the Dead! Following up on the masterpiece that was the
original, this sequel promises more gorgeous music, vibrant visuals, and a brand-new
emotional journey with Miguel and his familia. Ernesto de la Cruz wants revenge and Miguel gets to see Mama Coco again. We’re hoping that Mama Coco plays a driving role in the sequel since her mental capacity in the first movie didn’t grant her much agency. Plus, I’m 100% biased on this one since DÃa de los Muertos is my birthday. We’ve got a bit of a wait though with the movie not slated to come out until 2029.
Ghost Market
In era full of prequels and sequels, we’re really excited to see a new, original Pixar concept. D23 offered a small glimpse into this vibrant and spooky world. I wonder who my new favorite character will be?!
Incredibles 3
It’s been a hot minute since Incredibles 2. I’m not really sure how they could top it – we loved that the second one focused on Mrs. Incredible (AKA Elastigirl). The premise shared was one that follows Violet and Dash on their own journeys to prove themselves as superheroes.
Princess Diaries 3
Shut. UP! At D23, the Queen of Genovia herself formally announced that there are plans for the third movie. They have zero information about it, but that’s OK! It’s a bummer that Julie Andrews already announced she wouldn’t be in it, but I’m hoping they casually mentioned in the movie that she’s retired on a beach somewhere. She deserves it.
Part 2: The Magic Kingdom & Beyond
Spaceship Earth Refurbishment
This is LONG overdue. We’re pretty sure they have planned for a refurbishment for this ride years ago, but then COVID happened. This resulted in some pretty significant pauses on many capital projects. Hopefully the downtime doesn’t tragically impact the ideal 1-day EPCOT itinerary. Imagineers shared that they’d keep the spirit of the ride alive, but shift from a focus on “human communication” to one of “human connection.” The shift worries us a little. Will we still be able to thank the Phoneticians?! We’re excited – just a little weary.
Figment
One little spark of inspiration! Not only is Figment – The Journey Into Imagination getting an update, BUT the Dreamfinder is also returning. I personally have never experienced the Dreamfinder, but Nicole could not be more excited. I’m very interested to see what they do with the ride re-imagining. There are literally infinite possibilities.
Villians Land
This expansion was originally announced at the last D23, two years ago. This year we go the official title (which was also the working title?), as well as news about a new Maleficent roller coaster and a Magic Mirror dark ride. In previously announcements, it’s also been revealed that Cast Members posted in Villians Land will be trained to be “mildly rude” to guests. I’m weirdly excited for this – like, irrationally so.
Piston Peak
All of the new concept art and ride designs for the new Cars expansion are really coming together. We love how vibrant D23 can get with the visuals. Such fun! The national parks vibes are also fantasic and make for a unique take on the Cars land at Disneyland. The timing of this expansion should also be great for Skippy. By the time it’s done, we’d like to think Skippy will be old enough to actually remember the Disney trip!
Tropical Americas
Replacing Dinoland U.S.A. is the Tropical Americas in Animal Kingdom. We finally got the name of the new Encanto boat ride, concept art for the carousel, as well as a breakdown of the new Indiana Jones ride, replacing DINOSAUR. The concept art was bright and colorful, and we loved that two of these rides come with no height restrictions. We actually skipped Animal Kingdom because there just wasn’t a ton for Skippy to do.
